National Pet Memorial Day

Sadly, there comes a time in every pet guardian’s life when you need to say your final goodbyes to your pet. But a pet is not just a pet, they are family members who have been our faithful companions who walked beside us, comforting and helping us through the trials and tribulations of life. You love them, and they love you- and very few human relationships have such a bond.

When a beloved furry family member passes away, the grief can feel all-consuming, numbing, and exhausting. Our daily rhythms are intertwined around the needs of our furry family members, so every moment of each day can remind us of the pet that we lost. We no longer hear the pitter-patter or clickety-clack of their paws on the floor or their meows and woofs when we head into the kitchen, have them next to us on the couch or in bed, or the endless tail wags when we come home. The sudden changes in your routine and the silence in your home can feel deafening and shocking.

Losing a furry family member is an emotionally devastating experience and your grief is valid. A study done in 2019 found that for those who lost a pet, 25% of people experienced immense grief for 3 to 12 months, 50% of people felt grief for 12 to 19 months, while it takes 25% of people 12 to 24 months. So, be patient with you, take all the time that you need, and never be afraid to ask for help from your family, friends, or a mental health professional to help you cope with your grief.

At Duo Duo Project, as pet guardians, we understand the gut-wrenching pain of losing a beloved furry family member. The dogs and cats we share our lives with have made our lives whole, and like in the case of Duo Duo, inspired us to take action to protect dogs and cats from the meat trade and make a more compassionate world for all.
