Progress in Yulin

Updated: Jan 8

Together We Are Transforming Lives and Creating a Compassionate Future

Not one dog or cat meat stand to be found on BingJiang Street in Yulin!

A few weeks ago, Duo Duo Project Founder and Executive Director Andrea Gung returned from an inspiring trip to China, visiting three cities, including Yulin—the city notoriously linked to the annual Dog Meat Festival. It was her 17th visit to Yulin, and because of your unwavering support of our year-round work there (#Yulin365), we are excited to share the remarkable changes she witnessed.

More pet-centric businesses are popping up, showing a significant shift in how people in Yulin and other Chinese communities perceive dogs and cats.

Signs of Hope on Yulin’s Streets

Andrea walked along BingJiang Street and for the first time, she didn’t see a single dog meat stand! Just a few years ago, before the pandemic, at least four or five would have lined this street. Similarly, on Shi-Zi Street, a popular and newly renovated destination for young people, there was not one dog meat restaurant in sight.

Plans for  Y-Park, the trendy new pet-friendly shopping district in Yulin

What did she see instead? Pet stores and grooming salons! The number of pet businesses has grown since her last visit. Even more heartwarming, just around the corner, a new shopping district, Y-Park, is being developed. Its plans include a dedicated pet section with even more pet-centric businesses and a dog park!

These are not just surface-level changes—they’re indicators of a cultural shift. Step by step, the people of Yulin are beginning to celebrate dogs and cats as family, not food.

Progress You Can See, Hope You Can Feel

Are you smiling yet? Feeling the hope? This progress is the direct result of your support. Together, we are not just imagining change—we are driving it. Through relentless efforts, compassion in action, and unwavering commitment, we are transforming the future for dogs and cats in China.

But there’s still so much work to do. We need your help now more than ever to keep the momentum going.

Put your compassion into action today!

Let’s Keep Moving Forward—Together

Our Action for Compassion year-end campaign is critical to continuing this life-saving work. Your donation will directly support the next stage of our mission: the opening of our new spay and neuter training center. This center will allow us to provide excellent care for animals and protect countless strays from falling victim to the cruel, black-market dog and cat meat trade.

We are so close to completing this facility, but we need your help to get it across the finish line. Your support today will create real, lasting change for animals in China.

Each time we put our compassion into action, the impossible becomes achievable. Your gift fuels progress and amplifies the impact of our work, day after day, year after year.
